At Happy Ears, we focus solely on ear wax removal to enable us to provide a competitive price ear wax removal service. We appreciate that with current waiting times at GPs and that if you have been living with your current hearing levels for a number of years, you may feel some guilt in booking time with a GP, especially if it ends up only being an issue of ear wax build-up, rather than a more serious auditory or ear canal infection issue. Hearing loss can also simply come down to the aging process or be caused by other activities, such as your ears being subjected to consistent loud noises or a single trauma or injury.
If you are not sure, our clinician will carry out a no-obligation inspection on both of your ears. If there is clearly an issue with a wax build-up in the canal, you will be advised of the next steps to properly prepare the wax for removal. This will involve spraying your ear with a suitable olive oil spray a couple of times a day for a few days and then returning to the clinic to remove your ear wax using either warm water irrigation or microsuction.
Our clinician will look down the ear canals or both of your ears using an otoscope. We also have an otoscope that can connect to a tablet which will allow you to see what our clinician can see so you can see the build-up of wax for yourself.
Earwax, formally called cerumen, is produced from small glands and plays an important part in the protection and health of your ears. Its primary function is to minimise the amount of dirt in the form of very small particles such as dust and pollen. The prevention of these entering your ear canal is also why you have fine hairs nearer the entrance of your canal. The wax also keeps the ear canals lubricated as the skin in the ear canal is quite delicate, providing a natural cleaning function. Ear wax will also lessen the impact bacteria may have that come into your ear through activities such as swimming. It is quite common for people to have ear issues following a holiday where they have been swimming in warmer waters that are full of microscopic bacteria, which love to attach themselves to cuts or other skin breaks or inflammations.
This is why following ear wax removal having completely wax-free ear canals means you won't have your body's natural protection in your ears. Short term, this shouldn't be an issue, but if you plan on swimming or other activities that expose your ears to above-average dirt and bacteria, it may be wise to protect them with earplugs just for the first few days following cleaning.
If you have an ear canal with some bright orange (a little like the yolk of a free-range egg) wax around the outside or bottom of your ear canal and a clear view of your eardrum, is it unlikely you will require a wax removal procedure.
However, if your eardrum is not visible due to wax build-up, you should benefit from having your wax removed. The colour of the cerumen will give some indication of its age. Generally, the darker the wax, the older and more compacted it is likely to be. When ear wax has been removed, especially when a 'good chunk' has come out, this will often have a range of colours from golden orange to red, brown, and if very old and compacted, grey to almost black.a
Whilst many people, especially the older generation, have grown up using earbuds to clean out their ears themselves, this is certainly not advisable. Aside from the potential risks of sticking something down your ear too deeply and damaging your eardrum, you may be causing a cerumen build-up. This is much more likely if you have narrow ear canals where the bud will push wax further down the canal, where it will build up and compact.
So whilst you may pride yourselves on regularly cleaning your ears and thinking that they are clean by having nothing showing up on the end of an earbud - you may be causing a longer-term problem.
To help you appreciate some of the issues, we have a small selection of photos and videos below:
No. Although if you have already seen a GP and know for sure that the issue with your ear is a wax build-up then this will give you peace of mind when booking with us. If we identify that there is not a wax issue but an underlying ear problem unrelated to a wax blockage we will let you know and not perform any precedure.
Due to the nature of the procedure we only allow one other person to accompany the patient in the clinic - if their consent is given.
There are no age restrictions to ear wax removal using microsuction. However, for anyone under 18 written parental or guardian consent will be required. Following consultation and examination of the ears the clinician will decide whether or not ear wax removal should be carried out.
Just see our reviews and we provide a FREE consultation service. We always conduct an initial ear inspection before any treatment to ensure you do really need an ear wax removal procedure. If you do, we have a couple of ear wax removal techniques to use - such as irrigation and microsuction to ensure we are able to get the best results for you, compared to other clinics, which may only offer one method.
No. We simply ask that your turn up on time. If a wax build up is identified the clinician will them advise you on next steps.
The process of microsuction causes the temperature of the ear canal to cool down. This cooling process can result in some patients feeling a little dizziness or faintness, similar to vertigo, shortly after the procedure has finished. If you feel any of these simply let our clinitian know and you can rest for a little while untill it subsides.
The other effect you may get is a is a blocked feeling similar to a head cold a few days after. This is due to your body and adjusting to the change in the air pressure of your ear caused by the release of the wax. If this feeling does not go away after a few days please contact your GP.
