Ear wax microsuction is generally regarded as the safest method of ear wax removal when the wax is not accessible by manual methods. Very simply the equipment that is used is a miniature vacuum with a controlled low-level suction that gently sucks out wax from the ear canal. Many people will find it a little more comfortable than irrigation but often this comes down to personal preference as a number of people enjoy having their ears syringed!
At Happy Ears, we have several ear wax removal options available to us and with good reason. For example, if you have a perforated eardrum then syringing would not be suitable but micro suction will be.
There a minimal possible side effects with ear suction and is a relatively quick procedure so you will soon be able to get on with your day enjoying sounds which you were previously struggling to identify.
Before any of our ear wax removal procedures, we will perform an initial ear examination. This will be done with an Otoscope so we can see exactly where the build-up of ear wax is in the ear canal and if there are any signs of infection or any other reason by microsuction should or shouldn't be performed on you. One possible reason could be the hardness of the wax. This is why it is much more beneficial to you if you have followed recommendations to put olive oil or other suitable drops, prior to your appointment to soften the wax. Whilst microsuction is an extremely effective way to clean an ear the makeup of the wax build-up may mean than some manual work may need to be done first to ensure that the suction probe will be able to clean out the wax from your ear or possibly some warm water irrigation. The procedure may take on average around 12 minutes per ear but this will vary from individual to individual based on the amount of wax, its position in the ear canal and how soft it is.
Generally, the cleaning aspect of micro suction should be completed in around half an hour for both ears and you should notice an immediate difference.
The procedure is not painful but some people may be a little more sensitive to the noise of the suction process and as a result, may find it a little uncomfortable. However, as mentioned the procedure should not last for long. We will start the process slowly and gently so that you can let us know if there is anything, which may be causing you a little concern - most people experience no discomfort at all. Clearly, with a microsuction procedure in particular it is important to stay as still as possible throughout
As well as being able to hear better you may also experience a few internal sounds in your ears for a day or two after the treatment, and in most cases much shorter if at all, and this is quite normal
In very, very rare cases some individuals may experience some possible side effects due to their general body make-up and what they may have a predisposition for. Dizziness can occur and some possible trauma may arise simply due to the pressure release resulting from the removal of the blockage or patient movement causing the suction end to touch the ear canal with a little more force than would otherwise be given. If your ear has been blocked for many, many years this pressure release will be a sudden change which your body was not expecting.
If you feel any hint of dizziness after the procedure let our clinician know and you will be advised to sit down for a little longer, take deep breaths and have a little water. Your body should naturally settle itself again in a few minutes.
Generally speaking - yes but there can be scenrios when other methods or used in combination with other methds wull be most effective.
Yes - if done by professionally trained ear wax removal experts as found at Happy Ears. Attempting to remove ear wax using a DIY methods can be dangerous.
No. Although if you have already seen a GP and know for sure that the issue with your ear is a wax build-up then this will give you peace of mind when booking with us. If we identify that there is not a wax issue but an underlying ear problem unrelated to a wax blockage we will let you know and not perform any precedure.
This will depend on the position and nature of the wax build-up. If accessible, manual removal of ear wax is the safest method but often this option is not possible due to the position of the wax in the ear canal and the canal shape too. Microsuction is then the next safest option.
Just see our reviews. We provide a competitively priced ear microsuction service carried out by trained professionals. We always conduct an initial ear inspection before any treatment to ensure ear microsuction is the most suitable option for you. If it isn't, then we have other ear wax removal techniques to use - such as irrigation to ensure we are able to get the best results for you, compared to other clinics, which may only offer one method of ear wax removal.
You can go on a flight following ear microsuction unless you have been advised not to due to other medical reasons.
There are no age restrictions to ear wax removal using microsuction. However, for anyone under 18 written parental or guardian consent will be required. Following consultation and examination of the ears the clinition will decide whether or not ear wax removal ising irrigation should be carried out.
Due to the nature of the procedure we only allow one other person to accompany the patient in the clinic if their consent is given.
Yes - If you have been advised to have your ear wax removed we recommend applying an olive oil spray to the affected ear or ears. This is available from most pharmacies to loosen the ear wax and should be applied for at least 2 days before your appointment, ideally 3-5 days, twice a day. This will minimise the need for a second appointment.
We DO NOT recommend the use of sodium bicarbonate ear drops.
Due to the gradual suction of ear wax bit by bit the procedure should not cause any pain, especially if olive oil spray has been used to soften the ear wax.
The most effective wax removal using microsuction is when the ear wax is soft. By using olive oil spray for longer it will penetrate further and soften more of the wax. Hard wax can be more uncomfortable to remove and if too hard for the microsuction device it may not be possible to remove it all in one session.
The process of microsuction causes the temperature of the ear canal to cool down. This cooling process can result in some patients feeling a little dizziness or faintness, similar to vertigo, shortly after the procedure has finished. If you feel any of these simply let our clinitian know and you can rest for a little while untill it subsides.
The other effect you may get is a is a blocked feeling similar to a head cold a few days after. This is due to your body and adjusting to the change in the air pressure of your ear caused by the release of the wax. If this feeling does not go away after a few days please contact your GP.
